Perry has the father of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. She was not allowed to begin acting with her parents till she reached adulthood, as they feared the stress it would result in. Perry claimed that she was timid to perform during high school, but started acting in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, caused her to move to California again where she began working in the stage. She and her mother starred on Broadway with her for the play The Other Place, in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared nine times in the ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal which starred her father. Also, she was cast on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger of Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The character was picked through an audition, even having a strong association with it.
